Campus Zionists tell Arab to blow herself up, and host Israeli general who calls Arabs a "cancer" --

Last night (Monday, November 2), Israeli Brigadier General (ret.) Effie Eitam gave a talk at the University at Buffalo. The talk, sponsored by Buffalo Hillel and the Jewish National Fund (JNF), has generated a good deal of controversy, including a protest during the talk. I’ll begin with an announcement I drew up drawing attention to some of General Eitam’s statements, and inviting people to the protest. The links give a good taste of General Eitam’s extreme positions:

Sometimes, people overuse the word “fascist”; sometimes, it fits just right.

Hillel of Buffalo and the Jewish National Fund are sponsoring a campus talk by Israeli Brigadier General Effie Eitam, a man so extreme that he has attacked Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert from the right! Israeli journalist Uri Avnery has called him “the #1 fascist in Israel.” General Eitam

—calls Palestinians a “ticking bomb” and a “cancer“ that Israel must cut out.
—admits that Israel attacked Palestinian schools in Gaza; advocates mass transfer of Gaza civilians and turning Gaza Strip into a “free hunting zone.”.
—organizes, as Housing Commissioner, illegal Israeli colonization of the West Bank.
—calls on Israel to expel West Bank Palestinians and colonize their land.
—demands that Israeli Palestinians be ethnically cleansed.
—advocates using Palestinian civilians as human shields in battle.
—calls nations other than Israel a “world of robots without souls.”
—worships warfare in classic fascist fashion: “In war, the most sublime things in man appear. . . . There is a certain uplifting, like the offering of a sacrifice.”

Stop the Hate! At 6:30 p.m. tonight, please join concerned UB students, faculty, and members of the community for the protest in the lobby of the Student Union. General Eitam’s lecture, allegedly open to the public, follows at 7:30.

It was one of the most energetic, unified, raucous, and impressive demonstrations I’ve seen on the UB campus. Thanks are due to primarily to UB Students for Justice in Palestine, and also to the Palestine-Israel Committee of the Western New York Peace Center, and many students, teachers, and other friends from the community.

The lecture room was packed: at least 100 people, maybe more. Moderator Dan Lenard began with a denunciation of our effort to present critical information about Eitam and to urge Hillel to cancel the lecture. General Eitam’s lecture was a mish-mash of Arab-hating, awkwardly-presented hasbara (Israeli boosterism and propaganda), and pure lies.

He actually said that Iran is behind Al Qaeda (no, I’m not making this up), that Palestinians fled their homes in 1948 because Arab leaders ordered them to do so (a myth debunked decades ago by Walid Khalidi and Erskine Childers), that everyone should stop worrying about the Palestinians and let Israel take care of them (they certainly do seem inclined to do this, as the Gaza Massacre shows), that there was a constant barrage of rockets from Gaza until Israel invaded (simply a lie: see “Israel’s Fabricated Rocket Crisis”), and that Palestinians on the West Bank are desperate for Israel to maintain the Occupation and save them from Hamas.

Eitam was practicing not just the Big Lie Theory, but the Multiple Hilarious Big Lies Theory. There simply was no time to address them all.

General Eitam devoted most of the evening to inciting a US war against Iran. Like so many American warhawks unfazed by the disastrous war we have waged to find Iraq’s non-existent nuclear weapons, General Eitam is apparently indifferent to the baseline idiocy of this jingoistic campaign: two massive nuclear powers, one of them berserk enough actually to have used nuclear weapons against human beings, whipping themselves into a lather over the nuclear threat posed by a nation with no nuclear weapons. Eitam even included the most famous “quote” by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (in fact, Ahmadinejad never said it) about “wiping Israel off the map.”

In a quietly terrifying suggestion, he observed that Harry Truman was absolutely right to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, despite the horrors of the results. I don’t think we need to work too hard to see what this analogy implies for Iran. What would local media be saying if someone had appeared at UB urging Americans to launch an unprovoked nuclear attack on Israel, or any other nation?

As I read the room, the enthusiastic supporters of Eitam were not a majority. My wife suggests to me that some of the resistance among devout Jews in attendance, particularly Lubavitchers, may derive from Eitam’s rather strong suggestion in interviews that he himself is the Messiah. One attendee corrected Eitam on the infamous “Arab leaders ordered them out” lie, and he asked a pointed question about whom Americans should trust more, Israel or Iran, given Israel’s massive nuclear arsenal, its refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and its propensity for violating international law (just for the record, Israel has bombed and/or invaded Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and probably Sudan, while Iran has invaded, well, nobody). Eitam did not answer.

I corrected Eitam on two points of fact: his claim that there were no Palestinian refugees when the 1948 war broke out on May 15, 1948 (in fact, there were already more than 200,000) and his claim that Israel “gave” Palestinians full political rights (in fact, Palestinian Israelis had no rights at all and lived under martial law until 1966, and attained only limited civil rights since). I also asked him about his contradictory proposals for the Palestinians in the West Bank: he has proposed both to ethnically cleanse them through forcible expulsions, and to shut them into ghettos, without political rights: “Which do you want? You can’t have both.” He did not answer, but wandered off into space, talking about his proposal to assassinate Yasser Arafat and to exile Palestinian Israel MK Azmi Bashara. It was a sub-stellar performance, suggesting that, with Eitam, the Jewish National Fund may be scraping the bottom of its speakers’ barrel.

Incidentally, the JNF was, in a sense, the perfect sponsor for this event. It is famous for “redeeming the land of Israel” and “making the deserts bloom”—i.e., preparing and continuing the Nakba by razing Palestinian villages and olive groves, planting Euro-looking conifers, and stealing Palestinian water to keep them green and lovely. The Israeli author A. B. Yehoshua wrote a classic novella on this topic: “Facing the Forests.” Just last week, the JNF continued with efforts to stealing Palestinian land by planting trees in three ethnically-cleansed Bedouin villages in the Negev—when the mayor of one of those communities set up a tent to protest the action, an Israeli bulldozer came in and destroyed it.

Just as the JNF has aided crucially in the Nakba of the past and the Nakba of the present, so General Eitam is planning for the Nakba of the future: an Israeli newspaper quotes him saying “we cannot be with all these Arabs, we’ll have to expel the overwhelming majority of West Bank Arabs from here and remove Israeli Arabs from the political system.”

The formal part of the lecture and questioning ended, and those of us inside joined the demonstration outside, which grew and grew. I’ve heard that, before we came out, there was some harassment from passers-by, with cries of “terrorists!” One particularly bright young man spat on the floor in front of the demonstrators—as I always say, “If you can’t think and speak, then say it with saliva!” But more students were sympathetic and drawn into the chants of the protest, which focused on ending hate speech and resisting the drive to war with Iran. I think there were about forty of us. There was some spirited dabke dancing (certainly not by me).

We waited until the venue’s closing time, at which point General Eitam and his rather small entourage had to leave and walk by us. He came up to me and offered to shake my hand. I declined. He seemed to want an explanation, so I reiterated my objections to his racist statements and political activities. The chants of the demonstrators accompanied Effie and his posse out of the Student Union: not quite the triumphalist departure he’s used to. It was a good evening.

That’s about it. I’m afraid this visit has done a great deal of damage to Hillel’s reputation, and some damage to committed, long-term interfaith efforts in the area. Before the lecture there were a number of unsuccessful efforts to persuade Buffalo Hillel to cancel the visit, on the grounds that a sponsored appearance by such a hateful figure seemed likely to do damage to serious and ongoing efforts at interdenominational peace work. Some repair work will be necessary, but that work is already underway by people of good will, including some who attended last night’s lecture and demonstration, including a good friend who served for a year as a nurse in Gaza while her husband taught in the American School (recently all but destroyed by Israel during the Gaza Massacre), a Muslim-American professor of dentistry, and his Jewish-American physician friend, both of them recently back from charitable medical work in Syria and actively involved in local interfaith work.

The next big event of the Peace Center’s Palestine-Israel Committee will be next March, when the Palestine-Israel Committee will host a visit by Professor Ilan Pappe, the brilliant Israeli historian and cultural critic, author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. We do not have the financial power of the Jewish National Fund behind us, but if you’d like to help us raise money for the visit and for children in Gaza, I still have some bottles of Sumud Brand cold-pressed extra-virgin free-trade olive oil, and will gladly deliver to you if you contact me: $20 per bottle, with $5 of that going to the WNYPC and $5 to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (and $10 to pay for the oil). I’m at 884-0895, and jamesholstun@hotmail.com. You will also be able to buy bottles on the night of the Annual Dinner, November 7th.

Hillel Student to Arab Student: "Why don't you go blow yourself up?"

By Irene Morrison

On the Web at:

http://buffaloactivist.wnypeace.org/node/121

On Monday afternoon, I snuck into the private lunch for Israeli General Effi Eitam, a far-right, blatantly anti-Arab member of the Israeli government, held in the Hillel offices at UB. My intention was to confront Eitam about his many racist comments and the criminal actions of his government, only to hear shocking comments made by students in Hillel.

"Should we kill him when no one's looking?" joked one Hillel student, referring to Nicolas Kabat, who stood outside the Hillel office, handing out fliers to passerby. The flier is entitled "STOP Hate Speech on Campus" and quotes Eitam's reference to Arab Israelis as a "ticking bomb" and a "cancer" Israel must cut out, as well as his defense of using Palestinians as human shields.

In perhaps the most blatantly racist statement, one Hillel student shouted to Thawab Shibly, "Why don't you go blow yourself up?" But before this, two students remark of Kabat's flier: "But I love hate speech, that's why I'm here," and "I wish I had a human shield."

I then listened to Eitam go on a tirade about Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah, and how their efforts to make peace with them all failed, and “withdrawal” from Gaza was also a failure. He then compared Israel's reactions to the likes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, explaining that Truman had to "incinerate 200,000 people in a second" to protect American troops. You're right in one respect, Mr. Eitam: bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki is very similar to systematically killing Palestinians. Where I differ: they are similar in that they are both completely morally indefensible.

The greatest irony was his explanation of why they "had to" attack Gazan civilians. He related a story of a female suicide bomber in Israel before she blew up a bus, saying that she looked at an Israeli mother with a baby in her lap before pressing the button. "Even animals don't do that," he said, "when they fight, animals protect their children." He mentioned nothing of the 400 Palestinian children killed in the attack on Gaza, or the fact that their teeth sometimes shatter because of calcium deficiencies as a result of severe restrictions on food aid, or that 100% of Gazan children have PTSD.

When he was done speaking and it was time for questions, I asked him why he has made such racist comments as calling Arab Israelis a "cancer" and a “ticking time bomb” that needed to be expelled from Israel. I had to ask him the question three times before he denied ever having said those things, saying he can't believe people would take his words so far out of context, and that the Arab Israelis in parliament were being "very irresponsible." Of course, these statements are well-documented.

Before leaving (after being yelled at by the organizer for getting into a private talk, with two dozen angry people at my back saying nasty things to & about me), I reminded him of the 400 Palestinian children killed in the most recent attack on Gaza. I didn’t stick around to hear his response.

Update: The student responsible for the quote in the title of this article, who we know as Ben, profusely apologized last night after a stern reprimand from Joanna Tinker.

Norway's University of Trondheim to vote on Boycotting Israel

"A Plea to Norway's University of Trondheim to Boycott Israel"

Petition:

A Plea to Norway's University of Trondheim to Boycott Israel--

“Right and wrong are the same in Palestine as anywhere else. What is peculiar about the Palestine conflict is that the world has listened to the party that has committed the offence and has turned a deaf ear to the victims."

–Famed British Historian Professor Arnold Toynbee

“In the name of justice there cannot be subjection and in the name of peace there cannot be impunity.
–President Alvaro Uribe Velez of Colombia

“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
– Elie Wiesel

The Honorable Marit Arnstad, Chairman of the board

The Honorable Rector Torbjern Digernes

Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Trondheim, Norway

Rarely in history do individuals, minority groups, or institutions have an opportunity to courageously adopt a principled unpopular stand that could be transformative in world affairs.

For sometime during the genocide of Gaza it was two extraordinary Norwegian physicians and humanitarians who risked their lives to save the lives of Gazans.

'This is what hell must look like'

Two Norwegian doctors witnessed first-hand the nightmare scenes inside Gaza
Guardian, January 16, 2009

Norway has always been known for its worldwide humanitarian efforts and generous foreign aid. It is no coincidence that Norway is always ranked first in the world by the United Nations.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has just such a historic opportunity tomorrow when it considers voting for an academic boycott of Israel, a nation that for too long has lived by violence, ethnic cleansing, military expansionism, illegal occupations, subjugation of millions of innocent Palestinians, defied all divine and international laws that respect and value human life, and that since its establishment has committed countless terrorist acts and war crimes, lately documented by the Goldstone Report, all with impunity, never accountable for its actions in courts of justice, the U.N., or to all of humanity. The West, especially the U.S., has constantly protected Israel’s interests at the expense of its own interests.

You may remember this headline in Aftenposten, 12/1/06:

“USA threats after boycott support”

“US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice threatened Norway with "serious political consequences" after Finance Minister and Socialist Left Party leader Kristin Halvorsen admitted to supporting a boycott of Israeli goods.”

A quote by the Nobel Prize Winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn encompasses both Israel’s non-stop violence against innocent Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian and Jordanian civilians and its brilliant intimidating propaganda that established the persecutor as the persecuted.

“Violence can only be concealed by a lie, and the lie can only be maintained by violence. Any man who has once proclaimed violence as his method is inevitably forced to take the lie as his principle.”

As a former academician I plead and urge you to take the only righteous stand possible against Israel and that is for your esteemed University to vote yes on an academic boycott of Israel. Your courage will open the door for Universities and other institutions around the world to follow your example.

In 1982 Sharon invaded Lebanon committing a widespread genocide that began in Southern Lebanon and ended in a three month devastating siege of Beirut, a city overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of refugees from Southern Lebanon who fled the Israeli army’s advance. This genocide resulted in the murder of 20,000 Lebanese and Palestinian civilians other than the cold blooded massacre of 1,700 Palestinians in the refugee camps of Sabra and Chatila. Under Sharon’s protection, encouragement, and direction, the Christian Phalangists shed the blood of men, women, the elderly and children. Sharon even provided powerful night lights for the murderers to commit their slaughter. All the world could do is condemn the massacre without laying blame on Israel.

From the air, sea and land Sharon unleashed his murderous campaign upon a crowded urban city bombing churches, mosques, hospitals, schools, orphanages, retirement homes, electrical and water plants, roads, bridges, the airport and sea port; not even ambulances and medics were spared.

He would bomb bakeries where men, women and children stood in long lines for scarce bread.

Planes would bomb an area and await the gathering of ambulances, medics and citizens to pull persons out of the wreckage only to bomb it again to inflict more casualties.

Ambassador Phil Habib, Reagan’s personal envoy to stop the genocide in Beirut worked hard to reach a peace agreement between Sharon and Lebanon while promising the safety of the Palestinian civilians upon the departure of Yasser Arafat and the PLO from Lebanon. However, he discovered that Israel could never be trusted to keep its word.

In John Boykin’s book, “Cursed is the Peacemaker” (2002, Applegate Press) he quotes Ambassador Habib as saying.

“I had signed this paper which guaranteed that these people in west Beirut would not be harmed. I got specific guarantees on this from Bashir (President of Lebanon) and from the Israelis–from Sharon'. He said he 'had been given assurances… that no action would be taken against the Palestinians remaining in the camps…. On the basis of those assurances we (Americans) had given our word. We had been deceived…. Sharon was a killer, obsessed by hatred of the Palestinians,' Habib said. 'I had given Arafat an undertaking that his people would not be harmed, but this was totally disregarded by Sharon whose word was worth nothing.'"

As is customary with Israel and U.N. Resolutions, Israel defied and rejected over a dozen UN Security Council Resolutions asking Israel to at least allow humanitarian aid into Beirut.

Israel’s intransigence to make peaceful concessions to the Palestinians that they too may enjoy the freedom, liberty and independence their occupiers enjoy makes us all complicit in this tragedy with our silence and inaction.

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”
–Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is shocking that the world accepts Israel’s genocides and threats against its neighbors as fait accompli without regard to the never ending suffering of Palestinians under its brutal military occupation. Palestinians and Lebanese die, suffer and endure in silence in a world conditioned to accept Israel’s “right to self defense”, a euphemism for wanton murder. They die in silence, absent from the western conscience due to the blanket support of most western media outlets, none more so than in America, the nation exporting democracy and freedom through smart bombs and biased politicians who if they dare to criticize Israel jeopardize their ambitions and become the recipients of the worst media smears. In the U.S. no debate or action is allowed against Israel either by our own “never challenge Israel” government or by our staunchly Pro-Israel media.

The academicians and experts invited to your university to speak on this issue know first hand their personal victimization at the hands of Pro-Israel forces. They have risked much for the truth and are honorable men and women.

Please do the right thing and vote for an academic boycott of Israel, a nation that is neither civilized nor democratic, by setting an educational precedent for your university, faculty, alumni, but most importantly for your students, that standing up for principles is the foundation for all just laws and human rights for all peoples and not just the powerful few.

Teach them to adopt “freedom from fear” as their guiding principle in life while facing all challenges, especially challenges that discriminate between the powerful and the weak, the haves and have nots, that no people should be victimized by the power of money and weapons.

“"Freedom from fear" could be said to sum up the whole philosophy of human rights”
-The late Honorable Dag Hammarskjold

“Giving Flight To Dreams”….Yes, we dare to dream, we dare to act.

National Lawyers Guild Calls for Immediate and "Independent Investigation Into Assassination of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah by FBI Agents in Dearborn"

Nov. 2, 2009

http://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2009/11/02-7

NEW YORK - November 2 - The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) calls for an immediate and independent investigation into the FBI's fatal shooting on October 28 of Islamic leader Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah in Dearborn, Michigan. The FBI killed him during a series of raids of the Masjid Al-Haqq Mosque by federal and local law enforcement officials in which 11 others were arrested. While mainstream media outlets are calling the killing and arrests a counter-terrorism operation, the raids arose out of criminal complaints containing no specific allegations of violations of federal law or acts of terrorism.

All reports from local residents and community leaders indicate that Imam Abdullah and Mosque members were dedicated to improving the community, feeding hungry neighborhood residents and helping young people in need, even letting many sleep in the mosque during inclement weather.

By publicizing the killing and arrests as related to terrorism, absent any such allegations in the complaint, the FBI seems to be engaging in the same tactics used in its Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO), in which it spied on, infiltrated and disrupted political movements. Imam Abdullah had a close relationship with Imam Jamil Abdullah al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, was a field organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later served as national chairman of the Black Panther Party (BPP).

The FBI and mainstream media blamed the organizing work of SNCC for the urban rebellions in over 200 cities in the late 1960s.

The Black Panther Party was COINTELPRO's primary target, but it targeted a vast array of others, including Martin Luther King. In light of these events, we cannot trust the claim that COINTELPRO has been abandoned. Many have been imprisoned on spurious charges-Al-Amin, for example, maintains his innocence in the deaths of Atlanta law-enforcement officers and has sought an appeal of his case. Reports indicated that he has been harassed and placed in isolation in the Georgia prison system. Over two dozen BPP members were killed by law enforcement between 1968 and 1971.

The National Lawyers Guild advocated on behalf of, and represented, members of the BPP and other political organizations. The FBI tried to have the Guild labeled as a subversive organization, and for many years spied on and infiltrated the association and its individual members.

Guild president David Gespass said, "It took more than twenty years to prove in court that Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were targeted and murdered by the FBI and Chicago police. We cannot wait that long for the truth of what happened to Imam Abdullah."
###

The National Lawyers Guild is dedicated to the need for basic and progressive change in the structure of our political and economic system. Through its members--lawyers, law students, jailhouse lawyers and legal workers united in chapters and committees--the Guild works locally, nationally and internationally as an effective political and social force in the service of the people.

Yes, FOX news, and the FBI, want to showcase their sympathy for the dog ("Freddy") killed in the FBI's assault--

"...Thursday night the Detroit FBI office sent out a news release to honor one of their own. The FBI's K-9, Freddy, was killed by gunfire during Wednesday's raid at the warehouse in Dearborn. To honor Freddy, the FBI has set up a memorial fund in his memory, to benefit the K-9 Law Enforcement Memorial. The head of FBI's Detroit office even made reference to Freddy's service during today's news conference, saying Freddy's loss was especially difficult for the FBI field agent who has worked closely with him for the past year."

Luqman Ameen Abdullah

(FinalCall.com) - Muslims from across the United States converged at the Muslim Center in Detroit, Michigan, October 31 for the Janazah prayer service and funeral for Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah.

The 53-year old leader of Masjid Al-Haqq was gunned down by FBI agents on October 28 after a raid on a warehouse just outside of Detroit.

‘To those who have worked with Imam Luqman A. Abdullah, allegations of illegal activity, resisting arrest, and ‘offensive jihad against the American government' are shocking and inconsistent. In his ministry he consistently advocated for the downtrodden and always spoke about the importance of connecting with the needs of the poor.’

— Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA)

Several subsequent raids were conducted at different locations and ten others have been arrested including the late imam's son Mujahid Abdullah (also known as Mujahid Carswell), who, according to the FBI was taken into to custody in Windsor, Ontario by Royal Canadian Mounted Police on October 29.

The FBI's 43-page affidavit detailed a federal investigation of the group which began in 2007 charging Imam Abdullah and the other defendants with running an interstate crime ring involving receiving and selling stolen goods, mail and insurance fraud, illegal possession of firearms, body armor and tampering with motor vehicle identification numbers.

According to FBI special agent Gary Leone, the evidence gained during the investigation came through visual surveillance, electronic surveillance (wire and oral) and the use of informants within the group.

“The investigation has shown that Luqman Ameen Abdullah, Imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq, in Detroit, Michigan, is a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group consisting primarily of African-Americans, some of whom converted to Islam while they were serving sentences in various prisons across the United States. Their primary mission is to establish a separate, sovereign Islamic state 'The Ummah' within the borders of the United States governed by Shariah law. The Ummah is to be ruled over by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown, who is currently serving a life sentence in the Florence, Colorado Supermax for shooting two police officers in Georgia,” according to agent Leone.

The affidavit also alleges that Imam Abdullah “calls his followers to an offensive jihad, rather than a defensive jihad” and that he “regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric.” Additionally, the FBI alleges that Imam Abdullah's followers trained in the use of firearms, martial arts and sword fighting and that he encouraged his followers to carry firearms.

Those who knew him well, and served with him in Muslim outreach programs have a completely different view.

The Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA) led by Imam Siraj Wahhaj expressed “deep sadness and concern” regarding Imam Abdullah's death.

“To those who have worked with Imam Luqman A. Abdullah, allegations of illegal activity, resisting arrest, and ‘offensive jihad against the American government' are shocking and inconsistent. In his ministry he consistently advocated for the downtrodden and always spoke about the importance of connecting with the needs of the poor.” Imam Abdullah served as a member of the Shura, or general assembly governing body of MANA.

Dr. Agha Saeed, chairman of the American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections, an umbrella group that includes all of the major American Muslim organizations, asked for the FBI not to link Islam to the case.

“It is imperative that an independent investigation of Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah's death make public the exact circumstances in which he died. And unless the FBI has evidence linking the criminal allegations to the religious affiliation of the suspects, we ask that federal authorities stop injecting religion into this case,” he said.

Amir El Hajj Khalid A. Samad, of the International Council for Urban (Formations) Peace, Justice and Empowerment, who had been in Detroit for counseling and comfort for some of the younger Muslims, distraught by the death of their community leader told The Final Call that he believes this is another case of entrapment.

“The inconsistencies in this investigation are glaring. The case is based on the sworn statements of informants. These informants were convicted criminals who were paid by the federal government for their work. These criminals were used to engage and entrap law abiding citizens,” said Mr. Samad. “The FBI has stated that this was not a terrorism case. However, the investigation was conducted by a counter-terrorism unit,” he added.

Mr. Samad also said the language used by the media and the FBI feed into a climate of Islamophobia and sensationalism.

Hodari Abdul-Ali, chair of the Social Justice Task Force for MANA agreed and called the use of informants “despicable.” Mr. Abdul-Ali described the imam as a warm-hearted and generous brother always willing to serve.

“I never heard him talk about going to kill every White person or every non-Muslim; he never talked like that. The slanderous media campaign is truly unfair and unjust. I think they are only doing that to cover up the misdeeds of the FBI,” said Mr. Abdul-Ali.

Referring to the media's coverage of the fact that an FBI dog was shot and killed during the October 28 raid, he said, “The reality is that they value the life of a dog more than they value the life of a human being.”

"Government should heed calls to investigatge Abdullah's death"

"DETROIT FREE PRESS"

October 31, 2009; 4:56 PM

Editorial by Jeff Gerritt

On the Web at:

http://www.freep.com/article/20091031/BLOG2505/91031023/1068/OPINION/Government-should-heed-calls-to-investigatge-Abdullahs-death

"More than 1,000 mourners this morning attended the funeral of Luqman Ameen Abdullah, the Islamic leader killed by FBI agents this week during a shootout in Dearborn. This was a solemn, sacred and beautiful religious ceremony, not a political rally. But imams did call for an independent investigation into Abdullah’s death. It’s a call the government should heed to clear questions harbored by Muslims around the world, as well as by many Detroiters, Muslim and non-Muslim.

"Such calls will grow. The Dearborn Police Department is investigating the shooting now, but Abdullah’s killing has blown up beyond metro Detroit. It could threaten relations between the government and Muslim Americans, and even between the U.S. and Muslim nations -- relations that President Obama has cultivated. Enough is at stake for a national body to investigate whether agents properly targeted Abdullah, or could have avoided killing him. Whether that body is the Justice Department or Congress, or some other outside agency, it must have credibility with all parties.

"As I wrote Friday, no one should assume government wrongdoing or impropriety — nor has anyone I’ve talked to in Detroit. Still, there is growing skepticism about what happened during the Wednesday raid, and how the government uses informants to infiltrate Muslim groups. The account now widely held in the community is that Abdullah was shot repeatedly by agents, after he shot an unleashed police dog, despite official reports that Abdullah fired on agents. Because Abdullah was both African American and Muslim, his death has racial and religious overtones, especially among a people who have faced excessive police force throughout their history.

"The government described him as a dangerous Islamic fundamentalist who advocated violence and Muslim rule, urging attacks on police and the U.S. government. But to others, he was a beloved brother, a righteous Muslim and modest man who helped uplift and sustain the poor in his neighborhood.

"African American Muslims who knew him told me he took in the homeless and fed the hungry, despite having little himself. As mourners — mostly African Americans but also Muslims with Middle Eastern roots and a few whites — filed out of the packed and steamy Detroit mosque, they gathered their shoes and addressed one another as brother and sister.

"The FBI says agents acted appropriately, but Muslim organizations will continue to press for an independent investigation next week. As questions linger, it’s time to get some official, and independent, answers."

"Prayers and Criticism in Wake of Detroit Imam’s Killing by F.B.I."

"...The Muslim Alliance in North America, a national network based in Lexington, Ky., expressed shock at the killing of Mr. Abdullah, who served on its governing body.

" 'Reference to the Ummah as a "nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group consisting primarily of African-Americans" is an offensive mischaracterization,' the group said in a statement.

" 'To those who have worked with Imam Luqman A. Abdullah,' it continued, 'allegations of illegal activity, resisting arrest, and "offensive jihad against the American government" are shocking and inconsistent. In his ministry he consistently advocated for the downtrodden and always spoke about the importance of connecting with the needs of the poor.'

"A funeral for Mr. Abdullah is scheduled for Saturday at the Muslim Center in Detroit."

Zionists choke off Palestinians' water, to "crisis point"

"Some Palestinians only get 20 litres of water a day, Amnesty says"

Israel 'cuts Palestinian water'

Israel is denying Palestinians access to even the basic minimum of clean, safe water, Amnesty International says.

In a report, the human rights group says Israeli water restrictions discriminate against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

It says that in Gaza, Israel's blockade has brought the water and sewage system to "crisis point".
Israel says the report is flawed and the Palestinians get more water than was agreed under the 1990s peace deal.

'Basic need'

In the 112-page report, Amnesty says that on average Palestinian daily water consumption reaches 70 litres a day, compared with 300 litres for the Israelis.

"Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians' access to water" --Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International

--------------------------

It says that some Palestinians barely get 20 litres a day - the minimum recommended even in humanitarian emergencies.

Amnesty says that Israel denies West Bank Palestinians to dig wells, and has even destroyed cisterns and impounded water tankers.

At the same time, the report claims, Israeli settlers are enjoying swimming pools and green gardens.

In Gaza, Israel refuses access to many of the building materials needed to renovate the ailing water system, the document says.

It adds that Israel uses more than 80% of the water from the Mountain Aquifer - the main source of underground water in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

"Water is a basic need and a right, but for many Palestinians obtaining even poor-quality, subsistence-level quantities of water has become a luxury that they can barely afford," Amnesty's Donatella Rovera said.

"Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians' access to water."

Ms Rovera also urged Israel to "take responsibility for addressing the problems it created by allowing Palestinians a fair share of the shared water resources".

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said the report was factually inaccurate, accusing the Palestinians of mismanaging water resources.

He also rejected the claim that Israel was preventing Palestinians from drilling for water.
The spokesman said Israel had approved 82 such projects but the Palestinians had only implemented 26 of them.

Boycotting Apartheid Israel, at the University of Pittsburgh

"Palestinian conference reveals Israeli-Palestinian debate on campus"

Rachel Corrie stood as one of the links in a makeshift human forcefield. In six or seven seconds, her life was taken by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer.

The bulldozer ran her over twice, and her efforts to save local Palestinian citizen Samir Nasrallah’s home abruptly came to an end.

Stories of untimely conflicts between the Israelis and Palestinians are frequent because of the constant conflict in the Middle East. Corrie’s story, however, is unique because it will be expressed through a theatrical debut at a Students for Justice in Palestine conference this weekend, entitled “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel.”

The conference, which runs today through Sunday, focuses on building and enhancing the boycott, divestment and sanction, or BDS, movement on Pitt’s campus. Other participants in the conference include the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, Hampshire Students for Justice in Palestine and Pittsburgh Palestine Solidarity Committee.

The conference touches on a controversial topic not just in the Middle East, but also here on campus.

Panthers for Israel, Pitt’s pro-Israel organization, does not agree with the conference’s message.

Chelsea Zimmerman, vice president of Panthers for Israel, said the conference doesn’t promote equality between the two sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Each day of the conference is divided into several sections and includes workshops during which participants will learn about the BDS movement and the actors involved. Tonight’s opening event will feature Palestinian-American poet and presenter Remi Kanazi. On the final day of the conference, attendees will immerse themselves in a theatrical production of “My Name is Rachel Corrie.”

The BDS movement, according to Courtney Nassar of the Pittsburgh Palestine Solidarity Committee, is a successful, non-violent method used to gain justice in South Africa, which “brings justice and equality to to all peoples.”

The method involves creating pressure from foreign actors on the Israeli government, Nassar said. The intent of the strategy is to end the Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank and what Palestinian activists call human rights abuses of their people.

She said that boycotting Israeli products is one of the ways the Students for Justice in Palestine plan to effect change in a non-violent manner. There are three types of boycotting that can promote the cause: cultural, consumer and academic.

This past February, Students for Justice in Palestine, along with other pro-Palestinian groups, used a cultural boycott method when the exclusively Israeli Batsheva Dance Company preformed in Pittsburgh.

The conference stresses consumer boycotting. Jaffa, a popular variety of Israeli orange and frequent export to the United States, is one product which Students for Justice in Palestine and its supporters are targeting. The conference’s graphic features a blood-smeared orange slice with the slogan, “Don’t squeeze a Jaffa. Crush the Occupation.” Specifically, Nassar said, it represents the “blood of the Palestinians. If you buy a Jaffa Orange, you are buying into the Israeli occupation of Palestine.” She said that in 2003, Palestinians called on the United States to implement the boycott and divestment strategy nationwide.

Nassar said the occupation affects Palestinian human rights. Palestinians are losing their homes and jobs, and 11,000 prisoners and refugees are being held in Palestine or Israel, she said.

Nassar said a wall was built in 1967 to divide the Palestinians from the Israelis, which created checkpoints where Palestinians and their supporters are searched before entering into Israeli territory, where their land and jobs exist. Nassar experienced these “human rights violations” firsthand when she traveled to Israel for a month and visited the West Bank as a Palestinian supporter.

The BDS movement also calls for the American people to divest and know how their tax money is distributed.

“Roughly $7 million everyday leaves the tax payers and is given to aid the Israeli military,” she said. “We are funding the occupation and need to invest our money elsewhere.”

The groups organizing this weekend’s conference want the event to be about awareness. Students and community members will learn what products should be boycotted and the amount of effort — “very little,” Nassar said — needed to help the cause.

Pitt students and Pittsburgh community members “just need to show up and educate themselves,” Nassar said.

Nassar said she wants students and community members to know that the groups involved with the conference have problems with the Israeli government, not with the Israeli people.

Zimmerman said she’s concerned about the point of view that the conference will express.

“My issue with this conference is that the only [country] it’s pointing fingers at is Israel,” Zimmerman said. “If it were a conference calling on all countries who haven’t done their part, that would be one thing, but the fact that they are targeting Israel is what I have a problem with.”

Zimmerman said that the average Israeli person wants peace just as much as the average Palestinian person.

“No one is denying that there is a humanitarian crisis involving the Palestinian people in Israel,” Zimmerman said. “If this conference were to help the Palestinians in need, I would have no problem with that, but it’s not.”

Further, she said she’s concerned that she hasn’t heard Students for Justice in Palestine mention anything about Hamas, a known Palestinian terrorist group against the Israeli occupation, or the suicide bombings Palestinians have committed against Israel.

Zimmerman said that the divestment and boycotting plan is “lofty” and that an ideal starting point would be to look at the Palestinian leadership and its deprivation of their people.

“Money donated by the U.N. [to Palestinians leaders] is put towards corrupt ideals by corrupt leadership, which fosters hatred,” Zimmerman said.
The Panthers for Israel are worried that this conference will give students and community members the wrong idea.

The protests which Students for Justice in Palestine hosted make some Panthers for Israel members uncomfortable.

“Yes, they’re just standing there and not doing anything illegal, but they’re meant to elicit emotion. Posters of dead Palestinians draw attention and are inflammatory propaganda. I feel helpless,” Zimmerman said....
